5 Skills to Develop to Move Ahead in Your Career

Fortunately, for those who want to get ahead in their careers and continue learning, there are abundant opportunities to develop new skills that can benefit us in our jobs and business life.

Obviously, not all skills are equal or equally-applicable but the following five skills will serve you well in just about any career path you go down.

1. Public speaking. The ability to clearly and effectively articulate your ideas and thoughts to an audience--whether one person, a small group, or at a large conference--can make you a sought expert in your field. Sign up for a public speaking class at a local community college, or join your area Toastmasters club.

2. Project management. Developing the ability to manage a team around the completion of a project or product is a skill sought by many companies. There are many project management training programs and certification options available through local colleges and training companies.

3. Foreign-language. Learning a foreign language can be particularly useful if you work for a global company or want to in the future. Perhaps your company is expanding into a new country or you want to expand your opportunities here. Learning Spanish is a great option for workers in the U.S. and there are classes everywhere, from community colleges and language schools, to online courses available in your home or at the library.

4. Financial management. For anyone interested in moving into leadership or management roles in the future it is important to develop finance and accounting skills. A good understanding of financial management can give you an edge when looking for that first management position.

5. Coding. The influence of technology on the workplace will continue to grow and there will be an increased need for people who can create new technologies and develop new apps. You can learn to code at a local technology school or in the comfort of your own home through an online program like codecademy.

6 Simple Ways to Be More Innovative in Your Job and Career

Your career development and success depends on being innovative in your work, finding news ways to do things, and seeing obstacles, challenges, and opportunities before others see them.

Sometimes we're tempted to think that innovation requires some mystical process or is an innate skills possessed by the few. However, we all have the ability to think creatively and innovatively and we can implement some simple strategies to aid in the process.

Here are six ways to become more innovative:

1. Take a walk. Studies have shown that we get some of our best ideas when walking. In addition, walking, particularly in nature, provides a boost to our feelings of well-being, lowering stress, and making us more open to new ideas.

2. Learn a language. Spending some time on a new language challenges your brain to think in ways that are unfamiliar to you and opens you up to some new experiences and knowledge.

3. Meditate. You don't have to become a monk or some kind of guru to experience the many benefits of meditation, however, taking just a few minutes to calming breathe each day can make you more aware of new ideas and ways of doing something.

4. Meet with friends. Don't isolate yourself. Be sure to have fun and spend time with your friends and colleagues, especially a diverse group that holds different views. You'll be challenged to think differently.

5. Create something new. Anything, it doesn't really matter. Write a short story, compose a song, or paint a still life. The act of creating something new will inspire you to see things in new ways.

6. Read a book. Of course, reading is a great way to explore new worlds, meet new people (past and present) and learn about new subjects and fields, therefore, encouraging innovation and new ideas.

3 Tips for Building Up Your Resume

There is a lot of competition out there for jobs and job seekers need to find ways to stand out from the crowded field.

One important way to stand out is with a compelling resume highlighting skills, abilities, and experience that might be unique to you and particularly suited to the positions you are applying for.

Here are 3 tips to developing that "stand out" resume:

1. Learn a language. Many companies today are looking for employees that speak additional languages as they compete in a global marketplace. Take a class at a local community college, find a tutor, or learn a language through your library. Many community libraries offer free language-learning resources.

2. Start a blog. If you don't already blog you might consider starting one. You can set up one easily and inexpensively with wordpress, blogger, or tumblr. Pick a subject of particular interest to you or blog about one of your hobbies. Employers are interested in hiring people with good communication skills and blogging is one way for you to demonstrate these skills.

3. Teach a class. Another way to demonstrate your communication and leadership skills is to teach a class. You do not need to be affiliated with a school or have a specific degree to teach a class or a seminar. You simply need to be knowledgeable about a subject of interest to others. Many libraries, city recreation departments, churches, and continuing education programs at community colleges welcome community members to propose and lead a class.

These are just three ways to build up your resume. What other ideas do you have?
